Estonia Ranked as Free in Workers’ Rights Report

On August 31, 2010, Freedom House released The Global State of Workers’ Rights: Free Labor in a Hostile World, an assessment of trade union and worker freedoms in 165 countries. According to the findings of this first-of-its-kind report, one-third of the global population lives in societies in which workers’ rights suffer a significant degree of repression. The report found substantial problems in every region of the world except Western Europe, with the most serious abuses occurring in the Middle East and the former Soviet Union.

Estonia was one of the 41 countries ranked as “Free”, the highest ranking. It is among the eight Central and Eastern European countries to receive this ranking—the other are Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

Sofi Oksanen's 'Purge' Wins Fnac Prize

The Finnish author's novel Purge has won the Fnac prize in France. This is the first time the award has gone to a foreigner, according to ERR's radio news.

Purge was selected from 300 works published in France in the past year. The decision to award the prize to Oksanen was made before the novel began attracting positive reviews from French critics.

Kanepi Wins First WTA Tournament of Her Career

Estonia’s best tennis player Kaia Kanepi (WTA No. 38) won a WTA tournament for the first time in her life on Sunday. Kanepi defeated Italian Flavia Pennetta (WTA No. 12) 6:4, 6:3 in the finals of the Palermo women’s tennis tournament, which earned her a $220 000 prize. She is the first Estonian to win a WTA title.

This was the third time in her career Kanepi reached the finals in a WTA tournament. In the fall of 2006 she was defeated in the Hasselt final by Kim Clijsters, and in fall of 2008 she lost to Caroline Wozniacki in Tokyo.
