Estonia and Finland Applying to be Organisers of European Volleyball Championships in 2013

09 March 2010

Estonia and Finland are going to file a joint application for the organisation of the European volleyball championships in 2013, STT reported.

The initiative for joint organisation of the championships came from the Estonian volleyball Federation, which has a long-term cooperation experience with their Finnish colleagues.

The right to organise the European Volleyball Championships would automatically ensure the two countries' participation in the finals. According to plans, subgroup games would be played both in Estonia and Finland, but starting from semifinals the games would take place in Finland.

Finland has earlier hosted European championships in 1977 and 1993 but Estonia has not yet organised such a sports event.

Hanna Iiskola-Kosonen, managing director of the Finnish Volleyball Federation, said the good transport links between Estonia and Finland would ensure the organisation of the volleyball world championship competitions without any hitches.

Bulgaria and Denmark are also applying to organise the European volleyball championships in 2013. The European Volleyball Federation will pick the organising countries of the 2013 championships in October.
