Estonian Teams Place 1st, 2nd in EU Science Olympiad

Estonian high school students took both first and second place at the 10th European Union Science Olympiad in Vilnius yesterday.

Estonian winning team in EU Science Olympiad. Photo: Tartu UniversityIn total, 44 teams from 22 European countries participated in the competition, in which students had to solve a number of problems that put their knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology to the test.

Estonia has brought home medals from the competition every year since it started participating in 2005. This is the second year that an Estonia team has taken top honors.

The winning team in the week-long olympiad, which ended on April 29, was comprised of Timothy Henry Charles Tamm from the Gustav Adolfi Gümnaasium, Mette-Triin Purde from the Prantsuse Lütseum and Uku-Kaspar Uustalu from the Tallinn Secondary Science School, the University of Tartu said in a statement.

Maria Karjushkina from the Tallinn Secondary Science School, Magnus Kaldjärv from the Saaremaa Ühisgümnaasium and Eva-Maria Tõnson from the Tartu Veeriku Kool made up the second-place team.

Team members representing Estonia are chosen based on the results of national science competitions organized by the University of Tartu.
