'Let's Do It' Cleaning Up 7 Countries This Weekend

Massive civic cleanup actions are set to take place in Albania, Austria, Croatia, the US, Latvia, Lithuania and Egypt this weekend under the framework of the Let's Do It campaign, a grassroots initiative that originated in Estonia.

Cleanup campaign in Estonia in 2008. Photo: Delfi.eeIn Albania, 75,000 volunteers - a full 2.5 percent of the nation's population - are expected to take part in an effort to collect 25,000 tons of garbage on April 20 , organizers of campaign's World Cleanup 2012 project said in a release.

The next day Croatia will see cleanup actions take place in around 60 municipalities including the nation's 10 most populated islands

Some cleanup actions taking place in California are being organized by TV actor Ian Somerhalder ("Lost," "The Vampire Diaries") and his foundation, who are hoping to get more than 2,000 schools around the state to join their "Let's Get Dirty" event.

Let's Do It began in May 2008 when an estimated 50,000 volunteers picked up trash across the Estonian countryside. The project has since gone global under the name Let's Do It World, with local organizers in 91 countries scheduled to hold more than 500 cleanup actions this year.
